People blame their dry winter house on their city’s climate, but that’s only half the story. The real reason the air indoors turns bone-dry in winter isn’t how humid your city is — it’s how cold the outdoor air is, because cold air carries almost no moisture, and your furnace then heats that dry air without adding any back. Using NOAA’s January temperature normals, we estimated how low indoor humidity actually falls in 25 major US cities once that outdoor air is warmed to a normal 68°F thermostat setting. In the coldest, it drops near 10% — drier than a desert afternoon.

The ranking: where winter indoor air gets driest

The table below ranks 25 major US cities by our estimate of the indoor relative humidity you’re left with after the average January day’s outdoor air is drawn inside and heated to 68°F. Lower means drier. The headline is that not one of these cities lands inside the 30–50% range that health and comfort guidance recommends — even the mildest is below it, and the northern metros fall to the low teens or single digits.

A couple of things are worth pointing out. Denver has a reputation as one of the driest places to live, yet it sits mid-pack here — because its sunny winter days are milder than a Great Lakes city’s, so its indoor air, while very dry, isn’t the driest. And Seattle, which nobody thinks of as arid, still can’t clear the 30% line once the heat is on. That’s the whole point: winter indoor dryness tracks how cold your air is, not how humid your reputation is. If your city isn’t on the list, find the temperature closest to yours — the physics is the same everywhere.

The flip side of the ranking is just as telling. The cities that escape it are the ones with mild winters, because a home that barely runs its heat barely dries its air: once you get down to the warm-winter South and Southwest — Atlanta lands around 30%, Dallas near 34%, Las Vegas about 37% — indoor humidity in a heated home stays close to, or inside, the healthy range. The dividing line isn’t east versus west or coastal versus inland; it’s simply how many months you run the furnace.

Why cold air means dry indoor air

Air holds moisture as invisible vapor, and warm air can hold far more of it than cold air. On a 20°F January day, even air that’s at 70% relative humidity outdoors is carrying only a tiny amount of actual water, because 20°F air simply can’t hold much. When your furnace pulls that air in and heats it to 68°F, it doesn’t add a single drop of moisture — it just warms the air, which expands its capacity, so the same little bit of water now fills a much bigger tank and the relative humidity collapses.

That collapse is the number in the last column. Take Minneapolis: average January air near 16°F, warmed to a living-room 68°F, ends up around 10% relative humidity — drier indoors than a Phoenix afternoon is outdoors. It’s not that Minnesota air is unusually parched to begin with; it’s that heating cold air is, in effect, a dehumidifier you run all winter without realizing it. This is also why cities famous for dry climates, like Denver, don’t automatically top a winter indoor list — the driver is the temperature you heat the air through, not the label on the region. How we calculated this — and what it doesn’t claim

We want to be straight about where these numbers come from, because a ranking is only as good as its inputs. Every temperature here is a real NOAA climate normal; the indoor figure is a transparent physics estimate, not a measured reading in anyone’s living room. Here is exactly how it was built:

  • Outdoor air (input, sourced): each city’s average January temperature from the NOAA NCEI 1991–2020 US Climate Normals — the mean of the average high and low.
  • Outdoor moisture (assumption, disclosed): we assumed the outdoor air sits at about 70% relative humidity, which is a fair winter average across the northern US in NOAA’s Comparative Climatic Data. Because winter outdoor humidity is broadly similar city to city, the variable that actually moves the result is temperature.
  • The physics (standard): heating air conserves its water vapor, so indoor relative humidity equals the outdoor humidity times the ratio of the air’s moisture capacity at the two temperatures. We used the Magnus formula for that capacity, and an indoor setting of 68°F. Relative humidity is defined and explained by the National Weather Service.

So treat the indoor percentages as solid ballpark estimates, not lab measurements — the ranking and the scale of the drop are what matter, and both are driven entirely by NOAA data. Your own home can land a little higher if it’s tightly sealed and full of moisture sources (cooking, showers, people), or even lower if you keep the thermostat above 68°F, since a warmer room drops relative humidity further still.

What single-digit humidity actually does

Below about 30%, dry air stops being an abstraction and starts showing up around the house. The most common signs are the ones people rarely connect to humidity: skin that feels tight and flaky, chapped lips, a scratchy nose and throat that’s worse in the morning, static shocks off every doorknob, and hair that won’t behave. None of that is dangerous, but at 10–15% it’s a daily low-grade nuisance for months on end.

Your house feels it too, and here the damage can be permanent. Wood is hygroscopic — it gives up moisture to dry air and shrinks — so a long stretch below 30% is what opens gaps between hardwood floorboards, cracks trim and furniture, and puts acoustic instruments at risk.
